The indirectness is also connected to the power and social distance between two people. People tend to be more indirect to the people who are more powerful. Being indirect means we put ourselves in powerless position which cannot request to the powerful directly. For example, we can’t say “Give me additional time to submit the paper!” to our lecturer. It is considered as impolite. Indirectness is needed here to honor the authority.
